History of Brighton Beach

Named after the British sea resort Brighton. Once home to the elegant Hotel Brighton and Brighton Beach Race tack, it equaled the celebrated Coney Island seaside amusement area at the turn of the century. However, the erection of many apartment buildings in the 1930s, forever changed the complexion of the area. World War II saw its decline, but the 1970s, '80s and '90s, brought a new influx of immigrants and the area arose anew.

Today, the Brighton Beach Boardwalk, connecting Brighton Beach with Coney Island, is lined with restaurants and cafes, inviting banquet sized appetites to partake of the hearty fare.

Served by Community District 13
Zip Code: 11235

Claims to Fame:
Mrs. Stahl's Knishes (1001 Brighton Beach Avenue) offers the best knishes in town - plain, fruit, vegetable, cheese - you name it, they have it.

A walk along crowded, noisy Brighton Beach Avenue, darkened by the elevated train and dense with stores and shops seemingly projects the flavor of Little Odessa, as the area has come to be known.

The historic Brighton Beach Bath and Racquet Club built in 1919 still stands, but is in danger of extinction as a result of a tremendous decline in membership.

Singer/songwriter Neil Sedaka hails from Brighton Beach.
